He was born at Rochester, Kent, the fifth son of the late John Longley, Recorder of Rochester, and educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated in , graduating B.A. in He was ordained in , and was appointed vicar of Cowley, Oxford, in In , he received the rectory of West Tytherley, Hampshire, and two years later he was elected. John Tillotson () was one of the most renowned preachers of his time. He became Dean of Saint Paul's Cathedral in , then Archbishop of Canterbury in He was married in St. Lawrence Jewry, and is buried in one of the vaults which is now sealed.
